Stephen King loves to give his opinion on things he has watched on his Twitter account, even sometimes going against popular opinion about a movie, such as his recent comments on Night Swim and more recently praising Under Paris, a film with very mixed reviews.
This time he has saved his praise for a lesser-known Spanish horror film titled The Coffee Table (Original title La Mesita), which has largely remained under the mainstream radar. (I admit I had not heard of this one!)
Recently he shared his thoughts about the movie to his followers and called it horrible and also horribly funny, while at the same time guessing that his followers have never seen a movie as black as this one.
Reading about, it currently has a 7.1 rating on IMDB and a 100% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, as of right now.
The film is about a couple facing relationship difficulties that decide to have a baby in hopes of rejuvenating their bond. In a bid to prepare for parenthood, they venture out with their newborn to buy a coffee table, opting for one with allegedly unbreakable glass. But, this seemingly mundane decision sets off a chain of events with irreversible consequences, altering their lives forever.
The film made its North American debut on April 19, 2024, via Prime Video as a VOD rental or purchase. While praise for the film has been scattered across social media, Stephen King's endorsement suggests that a more widespread acclaim may be imminent.
