The Insidious franchise, created by Leigh Whannell and James Wan, follows the Lambert family and a paranormal investigator as they face sinister spirits and explore a dark, otherworldly realm called the Further.
Since its debut in 2010, the franchise has grown to five films and earned over $730 million worldwide, with a sixth Insidious movie currently in development and set to release in August 2025.
If you want to watch the Insidious movies in chronological order, then I have you covered.
Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015)
Set three years before the Lambert family's haunting, this one is a prequel that follows paranormal investigator Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye) as she helps a teenager, Quinn Brenner, who is haunted by a dark spirit after trying to contact her late mother.
This movie also shows how Elise teams up with her two assistants, Specs and Tucker.
Insidious: The Last Key (2018)
Insidious: The Last Key is another prequel that delves deeper into Elise's past, and the story shifts between 1953 and 2010, revealing her difficult childhood in a haunted house and how those experiences shaped her life and career as a paranormal investigator.
At the end of the film, Elise gets a call from Lorraine Lambert (Barbara Hershey), and this moment ties the prequels directly to the events of the first Insidious movie.
Insidious (2010)
The film that kicked it all off where we get introduced to The Lambert family.
When one of their sons, Dalton (Ty Simpkins) falls into a coma they must fight to bring him back with the help from Elise and her team and face a race against time as they battle against spirits to try and get Dalton out of the Further and back into his body.
Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013)
Insidious: Chapter 2 picks up right after the first movie, and as the family attempt to move on, they soon discover the Further, isn’t done with them.
This time, it is Josh that is possessed by a spirit called The Bride in Black, who has haunted him since childhood and now wants to harm his family.
Insidious: The Red Door (2023)
Insidious: The Red Door is set in 2019, nine years after Josh’s possession, and things have changed.
Josh and Renai are divorced and Lorraine has passed away, and Dalton is now in college.
Both Josh and Dalton have repressed their memories of the Further, which just makes them more vulnerable when it all starts happening again.
