So we have news on what Robert Eggers next film will be.
He will be teaming up with Focus Features again for his next movie, titled Werwulf, a werewolf horror film he co-wrote with Sjón, and it seems th pattern of releasing a film on Christmas day is set to continue with this film as well.
Focus Features recently released Eggers gothic horror film
Nosferatu, starring Lily-Rose Depp, Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult, Emma Corrin, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Willem Dafoe, which received critical praise and was a
massive hit at the box office.
I loved Nosferatu and in my
Nosferatu review, I explained why I thought it was a quite stunning film, so am looking forward to see what he does with this one.
Eggers attention to detail is nothing short of brilliant, and if you are familiar with his others films, this will come as no surprise, as the film’s gothic aesthetic is meticulously crafted, from the fog drenched landscapes to the creepy and historical interiors of Orlok’s castle.
The period accurate dialogue and practical effects help add a lot of authenticity, while the use of shadows, natural lighting, and atmospheric sound design create a constant sense of unease, and Eggers knack for building tension without resorting to clichés is in full swing.
Eggers Nosferatu is not a film that relies on cheap thrills or gore to deliver scares, but instead, it masterfully uses atmosphere, pacing, and visual storytelling to create that lingering sense of unease, and add in the haunting score and the carefully constructed sets and costumes, every aspect of the film contributes to a cohesive vision that is as unsettling as it is beautiful.
Eggers and Sjón, who previously worked together on The Northman (2022), are also producing Werwulf alongside Focus Features.
Very early days still, but I am sure it is a film many many people will be looking forward to, and I will update this page with news as and when it releases.
